On June 11, 1881, Princes Albert Victor and George (later King George V), while on a voyage aboard the HMS Bacchante, witnessed a mysterious red light in the sky. The light appeared suddenly, traveled across the sky, and then vanished without explanation. This sighting was detailed in their travelogue, The Cruise of The Bacchante, where it was noted as an unexplained event. Both princes and several other crew members on board witnessed the phenomenon, which left them baffled, though no further investigation followed. At the time it was believed they had witnessed the 'Flying Dutchman' or the 'Van Diemen'.
