On the night of September 2, 1891, near Coyote Canyon, New Mexico, an unusual aerial phenomenon was witnessed by Alonzo M. Swan and L. D. Dodson. These two men were camping in the area, hoping to benefit from the local mineral springs.
Around 8:00 p.m., they observed a brilliant light rising above a mountain to the south. The light gradually moved closer to their location, moving against the direction of the wind, which immediately struck them as peculiar. The object displayed a series of electric arc lights around its perimeter, creating a striking visual effect in the night sky. Additionally, there appeared to be a pole or rudder that was also illuminated, adding to the mystery of the sight.
As the object approached, it maintained a steady glow and continued to move in an unconventional manner, defying the wind patterns. After hovering briefly in their vicinity, the luminous object suddenly darted away towards the southeast, disappearing from their view. The entire encounter left Swan and Dodson bewildered, as the object exhibited behaviors and characteristics unlike any known technology or natural phenomena of the time.
