The Parramatta Park incident of 1868 remains one of Australia's most enigmatic UFO sightings. On the night of July 25-26, 1868, Frederick William Birmingham, an alderman and surveyor in Parramatta, New South Wales, experienced a vision that began with the sight of floating heads in the sky. Among these was the head of the Lord Bishop of Sydney, which appeared alongside others before fading and giving way to the image of an "ark" floating through the air. Birmingham described the ark as a beautiful vessel, and a mysterious voice, seemingly from a spirit, informed him that it was "a machine to go through the air." The ark then moved in a zigzag fashion before descending gently into Parramatta Park.
Birmingham's vision continued with an invitation from the spirit to board the ark. Inside, he observed two cylinders, presumably part of the machine's operation, and was shown a pilot house with a table covered in figures and formulas. The spirit emphasized the importance of understanding these formulas for the operation of the ark. Birmingham, deeply impressed by the vision, later discovered that the figures matched those in Molesworth's Engineering Tables for centrifugal pumps, which he found in 1869. This discovery reinforced his belief that his vision had a profound significance.
