The St. Clair Triangle UFO incident is one of the most famous mass UFO sightings in the United States, occurring in the early hours of January 5, 2000, in southwestern Illinois. The incident involved multiple police officers and civilian witnesses, making it one of the more credible and well-documented UFO encounters.
The event began when Melvern Noll, a 66-year-old miniature golf course owner, spotted a bright light in the sky while checking his business to ensure the pipes hadn't frozen. He described the object as looking like a "flying house with windows on the top and bottom". Concerned and intrigued, Noll contacted the local police.
Police Officer Ed Barton from Lebanon, Illinois, responded to Noll's call. Initially skeptical, Barton decided to investigate. As he drove towards the reported location, he observed a bright light in the sky. Upon closer inspection, Barton described the object as a huge, triangular craft with three white lights at the corners and one red light in the center. The object accelerated away at high speed towards Shiloh, Illinois.
Meanwhile, Officer David Martin from Shiloh also spotted the object. He reported seeing something similar, with the craft moving swiftly before speeding off in the same direction. Officer Craig Stevens from Millstadt managed to capture a photograph of the object using a Polaroid camera. A fourth officer in Dupo, Illinois, later reported seeing something that could be related to the earlier sightings.
The UFO was observed for over an hour, with multiple witnesses coming forward to share their accounts. Civilian witnesses described the object in similar terms, adding to the credibility of the reports. The incident drew significant media attention and became a topic of interest among UFO researchers and enthusiasts.
Despite various investigations, no definitive explanation was ever provided for the sightings.
