World War I officially began on July 28, 1914, following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on June 28, 1914. The assassination triggered a series of events that led Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia, which set off a chain reaction among European powers due to a complex system of alliances. The war quickly escalated, drawing in many of the world's great powers, including Germany, Russia, France, and the United Kingdom, into a conflict that would last until November 11, 1918. Known as "The Great War," it resulted in unprecedented carnage and destruction, fundamentally altering the political landscape of Europe and leading to the eventual outbreak of World War II.
