Father Carlo Crespi Croci was an Italian Salesian priest, anthropologist, and missionary known for his work with the indigenous people of Ecuador. Born in 1891 in Italy, Crespi moved to Ecuador in 1927, where he spent much of his life in Cuenca, dedicated to serving the local community. A devoted humanitarian, he educated and cared for many indigenous groups, while also collecting artifacts, particularly those gifted by locals, whom he assisted through education and social welfare initiatives.
Father Crespi’s collection became famous for its unusual artifacts, some of which displayed iconography and symbols that didn’t match the known pre-Columbian art of Ecuador. This led to speculation that some of these objects were evidence of ancient advanced civilizations or even extraterrestrial connections, with various theories emerging in the UFO and fringe archaeology communities. The "Crespi Collection," housed at the Church of Maria Auxiliadora, caught international attention in the 1970s, especially with Erich von Däniken’s books on ancient astronauts. Although many artifacts were ultimately destroyed in a fire, several have since been verified as genuine pre-Columbian artifacts, while others remain unexplained. Father Crespi passed away in 1982, but his legacy and the mysteries of his collection continue to intrigue researchers and enthusiasts of ancient mysteries.
